The Akademiks clothing company is a hip-hop centered clothing company that has been around for over ten years. In the years of its existence, it has gained a large following and managed to attract fans amongst popular celebrities as well. Akademiks is considered to be a leading force in the world of urban clothing. It was started in 1999 by two brothers who had an enthusiasm for urban fashion. Both pooled their resources and creative talents together to creator what is now known as the Akademiks clothing company. What started as a two-man operation has exploded into a million dollar business whose clothing is worn by many celebrities and regular civilians alike.
Akademiks clothing was created by Emmett Harrell and Donwan Harrell in 1999. Emmett Harrell grew up exposed to process of creating clothing due to his seamstress mother who sold hand made clothing out of the trunk of her car. It was from her that he learned how to piece together clothing. He himself had an art background and took college level art courses throughout his schooling career. Despite this, he decided to forgo college and head straight into the fashion business. He moved to New York and worked as a freelancer for four years, after which he got a job at major clothing company Mecca. He served as the company’s head fashion designer for a while until he made the decision to team up with his brother to start their own clothing line.
In 1999, the pair decided on “Akademiks” because of their belief in the importance of education. Their initial clothing aesthetic focused mainly on baggy, oversized jeans, t-shirts with logos, and an overall militaristic appeal. Over the years, their clothing has branched out into many other aesthetics, but mainly focused in the urban market. Akademiks clothing became very popular and went on to make millions and millions of dollars. This is due in part to its appeal to young urbanites, and also to the many celebrities who have been seen wearing Akademiks clothing over the years.
Many rappers have sported the brand, including the rapper Fabolous, who has cited the brand in his lyrics and has worn Akademiks clothing on his album cover. Rappers Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, and Dizee Rascal have worn the brand as well. Other celebrities including David Beckham have also worn Akademiks. While it has a high end appeal, Akademiks also has clothing pieces that are more affordable, like $24 t-shirts and $33 jeans. Even despite the recession and economic downturn, the clothing company has managed to flourish with its affordable clothing and timeless appeal. More recently, Akademiks has begun to take inspiration from the fashions of different countries, such as Japanese street fashion. Akademiks recently celebrated their 10th anniversary, and they are more popular than ever, showing no signs of going anywhere anytime soon. As a clothing company started by two brothers independently, Akademiks has definitely flourished to become a recognizable name in the industry. It will continue to be a staple in urban and contemporary wear.
