Don Ed Hardy became well-known for his unique blend of Japanese and American artistic styles and techniques in the tattoo world. Hardy’s printmaking background allowed him to open his mind to the concept of applying his tattoo designs to clothing. In 2002, Hardy allowed Ku USA to make a line of clothing inspired by his art. Hardy and Ku USA became Hardy Life LLC, which retains the trademark ownership and copyrights to all of Hardy’s artwork. The approach to the placement of Hardy’s bold, colorful artwork on the clothing was rather similar to that of the placement of his tattoos on the body. This clothing line caught not only the eye of the Saks companies, but also that of Christian Audigier. Audigier acquired the licensing to manufacture Ed Hardy Clothing.

Audigier, the former head designer of Von Dutch originals, took Ed Hardy Clothing directly to celebrities. Highly photographed celebrities wearing clothing from the Ed Hardy helped promote the line to the point that opening shops in well-known fashion hubs became the logical way to go. San Francisco, Los Angeles, Tuscon, New York, Boston, Vancouver, Johannesberg, Dubai, Kuwait, Bangkok, and Dehli are just a few of the fashion forward cities worldwide that play host to Ed Hardy shops. Even considering all of this, Ed Hardy clothing can be purchased at pretty reasonable prices as far as high end fashion brands are concerned.

Of course, tattoo inspired artwork with strong hues and patterns finds itself on T-Shirts, canvas shoes, tank tops, caps and athletic pants. Men, women and kids can wear artwork from “the godfather of modern tattoo” when it comes to Ed Hardy Clothing. One of the clever facets of this line based on the casually elegant renderings of Don Ed Hardy is that it thinks of more than just the expected everyday wear. These anything but shy, East meets West images find themselves flatteringly draped on shimmering tank dresses, swimsuits and intimate wear.

Hoodies and sweatshirts are naturally adorned with Hardy’s artwork, but some may not have realized how fitting such designs would be on scarves, purses, belts and wallets. The Ed Hardy Clothing line has a way for most anyone to have a piece artwork that can go with them anywhere on any given day. This is a line that’s best suited for the more free spirited. Those who enjoy blending different style genres and cultural influences are likely to feel that this clothing line is calling to them.

The sprawling designs that are found in Japanese printmaking made their way to the human body. Marrying them with American traditional tattoo art has created a forceful fluidity that is distinctively Don ED Hardy. Placing these artistic renderings on clothing and accessories has delivered an injection of color into the fashion world that it would be sadly somber without. Whether a small shot of hue is desired or a large one, Ed Hardy Clothing can be just right cure for one’s narcoleptic wardrobe.
