After finding huge success as a rapper and record executive, Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter launched the Rocawear clothing line in 1999 with his Roc-A-Fella partner, Damon Dash.
Looking to capitalize on the spotlight that was already shining so brightly on them, Jay-Z and Dash hoped to create a line that was a reflection of their own style. That said, in the years since its launch, Rocawear has grown from a street-inspired brand to a global lifestyle brand. Now, through a number of licensing deals, Rocawear produces everything from shirts to jeans, belts to handbags, hats to sunglasses and more.
The Rocawear brand now sees annual sales of over $700 million and recently added a women’s line to go alongside the men’s.
In recent years Rocawear launched an extremely successful women’s line, further solidifying the label’s spot atop the fashion world, something that appealed to the Iconix Brand Group, who purchased Rocawear from Jay-Z in 2007 for a reported $204 million.
