The Zoo York clothing line is a line of urban wear that was born out of an underground New York culture. In the 1970s, The Soul Artists of Zoo York birthed a creative environment of graffiti, beats, skateboarding and dance. By the 1980s, the term Zoo York had become synonymous with this unique, subsurface, New York lifestyle. In 1993, three skateboarding pioneers of the Zoo York scene came together to found a line of gear known as first of it’s kind from the East Coast. Rodney Smith, Eli Gessner, and Adam Schatz borrowed from their artistic surroundings to make skateboard decks and T-shirts reflective of Zoo York. So naturally, the trio dubbed the line Zoo York. The initially simple line of gritty, graffiti, hip-hop and skateboarding inspired decks and tees has evolved into a full line of durable urban wear.

The Zoo York clothing line is touched by military surplus and sturdily made with the skateboarder in mind. Men and women can be outfitted in the vast variety of everyday wear that is largely a blend of Zoo York City imagery and military design. The Zoo York clothing line is recognizably East Coast. This line of urban wear continues to be strongly supported by the artists, musicians, skateboarders and BMX riders of the Zoo Crew.

Currently, the Zoo York clothing line features slim-fitting, bold, plaid button-downs with military styled pockets layered over tees sporting screened designs. There are also hoodies with narrow silhouettes and more streamlined takes on vintage sweatshirt styles. The “puffy” vest of the 1980s has been tapered for an updated version with more style and function, yet clearly nods to it’s fashion predecessor. Slim, not skinny, denim takes the place of the baggy pants that were largely associated with skaters of the 1990s. Even though the lines of Zoo York clothing show more of the athletic bodies of the skateboarders, they loose none of the function of the formerly oversized styles of the past. There are caps emblazoned with tag-inspired variations of the Zoo York label. It’s the type of detail that wearers have come to expect from a clothing line who’s logo is a clever spin on that of the New York Yankees.

The Zoo York clothing line has shades that are rimmed in bold hues reminiscent of those worn in the 1980s, but with angles more commonly seen in horn-rimmed, hipster spectacles. Sleek watches, bold stripes, and tees with in-your-face imagery all meld in an fearless yet fashionable ease. The use of tailoring and military inspired elements harnesses the mix of patterns and iconography, keeping the Zoo York clothing line from otherwise being viewed as juvenile. This fashion line is instead a mild domestication of the raw energy and talent that springs from the land of Zoo York. Though it’s helped bring the underground into the mainstream, the Zoo York clothing remains authentic. Born from roots of the true New York skating, graffiti and hip-hop counterculture, the Zoo York clothing line continues to evolve yet never forgets from whence it came.
